Animal Welfare

Our caring is embodied in everyday life, in the way we interact with creation: the earth, water, air, plants, animals, fellow human beings and material objects – in short: everything that is entrusted to us. The encounter with animals provides easier insight into the levels of great connectedness between all beings. It enables us to experience the interconnectedness and the essence of life, that which carries us all.

Animal shelter

The animal shelter at Felsentor was founded in 2005. It is home to animals that are usually used very extensively as livestock in farming. These animals are able to spend their lives here on the alp as freely as possible and in conditions appropriate for their species. Furthermore, the animal shelter informs about the painful situation of agricultural animals in general and their actual needs. Assistance in placement of animals is also offered. Reflecting on our own attitude towards animals and a larger consciousness for their situation supports a happier life for animal and humans.

Sister Theresia

Sister Theresia, the manager of our animal shelter, has chosen the Franciscan Order for her monastic way in order to live by the spirit of Francis of Assisi and to be close to the animals. Initially, she worked in Innsbruck for many years at an institution for so-called maladjusted boys, then she looked after drug addicted youth at night. Since she has lived in the Felsentor, she has rescued and cared for other “marginal” members of our society - the farm animals. She is a trained animal protection teacher and in the summer season, upon request, offers guided tours of the animal protection center of the Felsentor Foundation.

Retirement home for chicken

Käthi was lucky. Not in the beginning of her life. She never saw daylight, never a blade of grass. She had to deliver profitable eggs in a confined space, was screened for slaughter at the age of 18 months. Käthi received a godmother and thanks to her, came to our “chicken retirement home”. Käthi's feathers grew again, she lost her fear and enjoyed being outside, she had a light in her eyes, her skin turned a natural red. Käthi and her friends can now live for many years to come.
Enable a fellow sufferer to live a life of dignity. Every contribution is welcome: monthly, half-yearly, a one-time donation. The sponsorships will only be used for food and, if necessary, veterinary costs. You are welcome to visit your chicken in the “retirement home” on the Rigi!
