Organic Farm Frohmatte

Our guests are always very enthusiastic about the quality of the food. Frida, who grows organic vegetables on the Frohmatte, make an important contribution to this.

If you walk down from the Felsentor on the hiking trail towards Weggis, you will reach the Unterfrohmattberg after about 45 minutes. The farm is situated at 700m above sea level on the south side and has a wonderful view of Lake Lucerne. The garden is not only blessed with a good climate and a fantastic view, but also with a gardener who works tirelessly to provide the meditators at Felsentor with food of outstanding quality and ethics. Frida, a farmer now over 80 years of age, has been working practically ever since she was a child to find out which plants thrive optimally in this particular location and under what conditions. A few years ago, she was asked by Vanja to use this knowledge for the food production for Felsentor. Since then, Frida has preserved ancient knowledge and experience about traditional cultivation methods and optimal location varieties and has gradually passed them on to the next generation. The results are also impressive in quantitative terms, as production is almost self-sufficient in certain seasons of the year.

Frida grows most of the cultivated plants from seeds. The spectrum of plants cultivated on the Frohmatthof is remarkable: from cereals (wheat, rye, spelt, oats and barley) to vegetables, berries and fresh fruit. But also, the freezing and preserving and drying of vegetable surpluses, fruit, berries and herbs forms a focal point within a garden year. For example, fresh green beans are served at Felsentor in summer, cooked with frozen beans in winter or served with a dried bean salad. A very special highlight is the collection of salads and wild herbs. Sometimes only a few hours pass between the harvest on site, until the food lands 400 meters further up at Felsentor on the plate of the guests. The Rigi Railway and several donkeys serve as means of transport. And once again, that closes the circle: Frida, as a child, delivered the vegetables to the hotels on the Rigi once or twice a week with donkeys.

Donkey transport

A small group of donkeys link the organic farm and the Felsentor kitchen: during the harvest season, they transport the garden products up the old hiking trail to Felsentor. Whenever the donkeys turn the corner with a soft bell ringing, accompanied by their guides, they are rewarded with little treats for their efforts. So, it is possible that vegetables, which were still in the patch early in the morning, are served in the evening at Felsentor. We are deeply grateful to the donkeys and all those who are involved in their care and support, for their contribution!
